VIG (previously known as SPIN)
is an intensive, home-based
programme which aims to improve
communication in the family using
video. The approach is based on
Colwyn Trevarthen’s work on early
communication skills and
inter-subjectivity. Practitioners
work closely with parents, children
and teachers in deliberately
capturing positive interaction on
film. The work comprises filming and
feedback and is supervised by a
qualified trainer. The focus is on
analysis of short clips of film and
the film taken is examined with
reference to the "contact
principles" a set of descriptive
categories which include eye
contact, turn taking, tone of voice,
the giving and receiving of
initiatives etc. When appropriate,
higher order communication skills
are incorporated e.g. co-operation,
problem solving, attended
guiding/leading etc.
Who would benefit from VIG?
