What is the Webster-Stratton
Programme?
The "Incredible Years Parents
and Children Videotape Series" has
been developed in the USA by
Professor Carolyn Webster-Stratton
in response to the increasing
incidence of childhood behaviour
problems and is aimed at parents of
children who are aged 3-8 years
(though the Advanced programme can
extend the age range to 12 or 13
years). It is designed to be used in
a group format with between 8 and 12
families at a time. The course is
based on well established
behavioural and social learning
principles that describe how
behaviour can be learned and
changed. It focuses on interpersonal
interactions between children and
parents, thus advocating that in
order to solve childhood behavioural
problems, it is also necessary for
parents to modify their own
behaviour. This approach does not
assume that the child is at fault,
or that the parent is inept. Rather,
the emphasis is placed on helping
parents’ interactions with their
children become more positive and on
changing parents’ responses to
specific behaviours.
Who would benefit from
Webster-Stratton?
Parents currently experiencing
difficulties with their children’s
behaviour and parents who want to
develop their parenting skills
further.
